Methane At The Tap
Grand Lake Plumbing & Heating walks through a whole-house well water project at a 1987 log cabin in Kremmling, Colorado, where the problem was unusually hard to ignore: the water could be lit on fire. The private well contained enough methane to create a flammability hazard at fixtures, along with other contaminants that made the water unsafe for daily use. The team at GLPH replaced an aging crawl-space system with methane aeration, explosion-proof exhaust venting, oxidation, sediment filtration, reverse osmosis, remineralization, corrosion and scale protection, UV disinfection, two 100-gallon cistern tanks, and a variable-speed pump delivering 60 PSI. Methane had to be removed and vented before the rest of the treatment train could do its job, while storage kept whole-house RO from chasing peak demand in real time. The result was treated, remineralized, pH-balanced water at every fixture, with the methane hazard removed at the source and 200 gallons of treated reserve on hand. Just as important, the homeowner now has test ports, a documented baseline, and known service intervals.
Cyclospora & UV Treatment
The Canadian Water Quality Association’s Podable Water podcast used the recent cyclospora outbreak to talk through UV treatment basics with CWQA Executive Director Shelley Peters and President Brad Vincent. Vincent explains that cyclospora is a microscopic parasite with a tough outer shell, which helps make it more resistant to chlorine. He said he’s seen research showing it can survive even in pool-level chlorination, so outbreak control often turns to physical filtration or UV disinfection. The useful point is that UV is not a magic lamp on the wall. The podcast gets into prefiltration, UV transmittance, flow rate, lamp changes, quartz sleeves, and sizing the unit to the actual application. Five-micron prefiltration was described as a common minimum because particles can shade organisms from the light. Their advice? Test first, size correctly, maintain the system, and do not sell UV as a shortcut around water quality.

Wildfire Water Checks
The Water Quality Association published wildfire resources for treatment professionals after fires in North and Central Texas, and the guidance is a useful reminder that the water problem can outlast the smoke. WQA says wildfires can contaminate source water, compromise pipes and plumbing, and damage plastic pipe through heat. Its dealer handout notes that ash can raise alkalinity and pH, while runoff can add metals and organic matter that increase chlorine demand and disinfection byproduct concerns. The nastier problem is volatile organic compounds. Damaged distribution systems can pull soot, ash, and fire chemicals into the line, and WQA notes that researchers found very high benzene levels after the 2017 Tubbs Fire and 2018 Camp Fire. Because VOC contamination can vary house by house, a clean test nearby does not prove the next home is safe. WQA says to follow local guidance, test for VOCs where needed, and bring equipment back online carefully.
LED UV Gets Certified
AquiSense says its PearlAqua Deca 30C is the first UV-C LED water treatment system certified to NSF/ANSI 55 Class A, a third-party validation point for a technology the company says is moving into more demanding drinking-water applications. NSF/ANSI 55 covers UV treatment systems for drinking water applications where pathogen contamination is a concern. The standard separates Class B systems, which are intended as supplemental treatment for disinfected drinking water, from Class A systems designed to inactivate or remove microorganisms from contaminated water. AquiSense says the Deca 30C uses UV-C LEDs instead of conventional lamps, giving it a compact footprint, mercury-free design, instant on/off operation, and flexible power cycling. For most, the certification matters more than the novelty. UV-C LED has been easy to discuss as an interesting technology, but Class A validation makes it easier to discuss as a true treatment option.
